Matt Van Slyke

Assistant Treasurer and Board Member

Before retiring in 2020, Matt sold biologically based inputs to corn and soybean producers making their transition to natural inputs, away from petro/chemical production.  In eight years, Matt sent out approximately 400 invoices to his farm clients. “My faith in humanity was restored” because “I never had to chase anyone for payment.” Every bill was paid in full, almost always within a month of invoicing. I never uttered the word “contract,” because their word IS their bond! Money didn’t turn Matt toward farmers. “The most gratifying results were seeing nature heal herself with higher yields and reduced use of synthetic fertilizers and chemicals.” Profit margins increased, and the land rapidly reversed generations of losses in organic matter, the leading indicator of plant health.

Companies and nonprofits retained Matt due to his 40 years of sales and marketing experience after graduating from university in 1982. A passion for principled business behavior deepened with his final employee status as a business development manager for a social venture, a third-party logistics order fulfillment warehouse that also operated three sheltered workshops for developmentally disabled adults. For this social enterprise, which helped fund its parent organization, he sold workshop contracts leading to training and paid work for 140 developmentally disabled adults. Within six months of implementing Matt’s marketing strategy for the fulfillment warehouse, it reached operational capacity and was unable to accept new business clients.

Before developing a green branding strategy for a commercial design-build photovoltaic (solar) firm, Matt acquired multiple Fortune 500 clients when he directed telesales of customer survey research services to executives. Prior to that, as a franchise development analyst, he assessed over 1,200 businesses as to their franchiseability. Other sectors Matt succeeded in selling include energy-efficient commercial lighting, water treatment systems, trade journal advertising, and retailer advertising.

Matt’s interests include serving as a licensed Science of Mind personal transformation practitioner and volunteer. He served nine years as a Big Brother, two in prison outreach, two as a court-appointed special advocate (for at-risk children), and three as a Congressional District Team Leader for the campaign to establish a U.S. Department of Peace.
