American Truth and Reconciliation Committee

Demand the Truth

“These four major political murders (John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr., Robert F. Kennedy, and Malcolm X) were together a savage, concerted assault on American democracy. The consequences still haunt our nation.” – Adam Walinsky, speech writer and top aide to Senator Robert F. Kennedy

A group of over 60 prominent citizens aims to convene an American Truth and Reconciliation Committee to bring out the facts of the four major assassinations that changed the course of the country and the world—those of President John F. Kennedy, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Senator Robert F. Kennedy.

The Truth and Reconciliation Committee calls for major public inquests into the four major assassinations of the 1960s that together had a disastrous impact on the course of American history: the murders of John F. Kennedy, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy. These public tribunals, shining a light on this dark chapter of our history, will be modeled on the Truth and Reconciliation process in post-apartheid South Africa. The inquests — which will hear testimony from living witnesses, legal experts, investigative journalists, historians and family members of the victims — are intended to show the need for Congress or the Justice Department to reopen investigations into all four assassinations.

GOALS OF THE PETITION INCLUDE:
CONGRESSIONAL ACTION
Demand that Congress:
-Release all illegally classified documents
-Enforce the JFK Records Act of 1992
-Hold hearings and fully investigate all four assassination cases
Demand that the Department of Justice:
-Reopen and fully investigate all four assassination cases

A joint statement on the Kennedy, King, and Malcom X assassinations call for Congress to establish firm oversight on the release of all government documents related to the Kennedy presidency and assassination, as mandated by the JFK Records Collection Act of 1992. This public transparency law has been routinely defied by the CIA and other federal agencies. The Trump White House has allowed the CIA to continue its defiance of the law, even though the JFK Records Act called for the full release of relevant documents in 2017.  Read more here.

A truth commission, also known as a truth and reconciliation commission or truth and justice commission, is an official body tasked with discovering and revealing past wrongdoing by a government (or, depending on the circumstances, non-state actors also), in the hope of resolving conflict left over from the past. Truth commissions are, under various names, occasionally set up by states emerging from periods of internal unrest, civil war, or dictatorship marked by human rights abuses. In both their truth-seeking and reconciling functions, truth commissions have political implications: they “constantly make choices when they define such basic objectives as truth, reconciliation, justice, memory, reparation, and recognition, and decide how these objectives should be met and whose needs should be served”.[1]

According to one widely cited definition: “A truth commission (1) is focused on the past, rather than in ongoing events; (2) investigates a pattern of events that took place over a period of time; (3) engages directly and broadly with the affected population, gathering information on their experiences; (4) is a temporary body, with the aim of concluding with a final report; and (5) is officially authorized or empowered by the state under review”.[2]    Source:  Wikipedia
